Tobi Podhaler

It's been a while since I've done a blog post so I've persuaded Lauren to do a little video, she has been using TIPS (Tobi Podhaler) for just over a year now and we thought it would be a good idea to show everyone how easy this new treatment is compared to the regular neb routine. The plus points are that it can be done anywhere because you don't need to have a neb and all the pots plus there is no cleaning required, just slip it into your bag or pocket and away you go. There is more info about the Podhaler in an earlier post on this site.

Sunday's Bike Ride

Today's ride was my first with a couple of guy's from work, they regularly go out, usually as a bigger group of about 6-8 riders but because of work/family commitments there was only the 2 of them today.

I left the house at 0840am to meet them at 0900am near the hospital in Grimsby, from here we headed out through Waltham towards Barnoldby Le Beck and then turned right onto the A18 for about 100 meters. After taking a left we hit the first of about 6 or 7 hills we would encounter on our loop. Beelsby was the next village for us to go through with a right hand turn followed by a very sharp but short hill, once we were at the top the road pretty much flattened out so we could pick up the pace and headed towards Swallow. As we approached Swallow there was a nice drop down into the village, I even managed to top out at 35mph, from here we headed towards Cuxwold which like Beelsby had a sharp right hand turn followed by a climb, although not as steep it was a long steady climb. Rothwell, Thoresway and Croxby were the next villages on the route, all with a nice climb to bring you out of them. We completed the loop back to Beelsby and retraced our route back into town through Barnoldby Le Beck and Waltham.

I think if the weather had been better we would have gone on towards Binbrook when we came out of Thoresway, maybe we will try going that way when the weather picks up. There is an old RAF base at Binbrook and it was used to film quite a bit of Memphis Belle with a lot of the extras coming from the local area.

I enjoyed my first ride out with these guy's and was quite pleased with my level of fitness, I will definitely be joining them again when my weekend shifts have finished.

Distance: 29 miles
Average: 14.2mph
Time Taken: 2hrs 2mins
Weather: Cloudy 4 degrees Celsius

Paul Weller Sheffield Arena

The journey to Sheffield normally takes just over an hour, but last night because of the snow it took us 3 hours to get there. We wondered if when we got there we would find the gig cancelled but we were happy to find it was to go ahead as planned. The effort to get there was rewarded by another brilliant show that contained some old JAM & STYLE COUNCIL tunes, plus a few of my personal favourites from the latest album....Wake Up The Nation, Fast Car/Slow Traffic and No Tears To Cry. I can't wait for the next time I can go to see him, I'm holding out until he plays the Royal Albert Hall so we can have another trip to London.

Lauren's Hospital Room

I have posted this short video of Lauren's hospital room at Sheffield's CF ward to show how nice it is for the patients. There are 12 rooms altogether, the ward has it's own Kitchen, Pharmacy & Gym. All the rooms are equipped the same and really help to make their stay as comfortable and as easy as possible. We have found all the staff on the ward are excellent because they want to work with CF patients and have had many years of experience treating CF.

The End of Summer.

29082010048

Yesterday marked the end of Summer for the Setterfields'. We had a good tidy up in the garden and packed away the chairs and furniture for another year. The fence, shed and back gate will all get a fresh coat of paint to help them weather an East coast winter next week. This weekend also marked the 17th anniversary of us moving into the house. So much has happened in that period of time, more than we would of hoped for at times but I guess that is just life and you've got to get on with it and do the best you can! I think Jo and I have? Oh, and of course when the conversation turned to Christmas the other day that is surely the sign of Summer being over!

Robyn starts back at school on Thursday after the summer holidays and Beth has got an enrolment day at Franklin College on Wednesday. This academic year is quite important for Robyn as it is her last in Primary school and she will be doing her SAT's ready for going up to Secondary school. We will soon start looking around the different schools that she will be able to go to and trying to make the right choice for her education!

September looks like it will be a busy month, especially with hospital trips. Robyn has her annual review towards the end of the month and Lauren has a 2 week planned stay for IV's and other tests to try and get her Lung Function up and at a constant level. Lauren will also be starting Carb Counting to try and help her CFRD, which in turn should help with the Lung Function. I attended a 3 hour lesson with Lauren to learn how you work out how many carbs are in different foods, it was quite an eye opener. Has anyone else who has CFRD tried Carb Counting? And has it helped them? The stay in hospital will give her a chance to try out the new CF ward, and I'm sure there will be some photo & video post's to come from her.

Anyway that's all for now, I'm off to enjoy the wet & windy Bank Holiday in front of the TV.

This Time Last Week....

This time last week we were in London having a lovely few days away. I have already spoken about what we did on the Saturday, now for the Sunday. We started the day with a good healthy McDonalds breakfast at Marble Arch, we walked from there to Madame Tussauds. When we got there I was pleased I had pre-booked the tickets because the queue was right down the street! When we got inside, the place was absolutely packed but we managed to see most of the wax figures without too much pushing and shoving. The best part of the museum was a ride in a London black cab, it was sort of like a ghost train ride without the ghosts, it took you through the last 600 years history of London, starting in Tudor times through to present day.

The next stop for the day after a short tube ride and some lunch was a ride on the London Eye and a boat trip on the Thames. Each capsules on the London Eye can carry about 25 people and it takes about 30 minutes to do a complete revolution, the London Eye was erected for the Millennium but was such a hit with the public it has stayed and is now London's highest earning attraction, you can even hire a capsule to get married in. The short video and photo's I took show how many of the sights in London you can see from both the Eye and the Thames. After we finished here we walked up Whitehall past Downing Street and made our way to Trafalgar Square to see Nelson's Column.

The next time we visit London we are going to look around the Tower of London, Shakespeare's Globe theatre and definitely the Tate Modern gallery.

Beth's Exam Results

I don't really mention Beth as much as I should on my Posterous, so today I'm going to talk about her recent GCSE Exam results.
For the past 2 years she has been studying to take her GCSE's, ready for when she finished school this summer. These have been in many subjects including English Language, English Literature, Maths, History, Health & Social Care, ICT, Business Studies & Food Technology. This week she received her results and we were very pleased with them.

English Language C, English Literature B,Science C, ICT 2 x C's, Business Studies 2 x C's, Health & Social Care 4 x B's, Food Technology C, History E                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 So this now means she can go to Franklin Sixth Form College to study for her 'A' Levels. She is hoping to study English Lang/Lit combined, Business, History & Philosophy, these are for 2 years and will mean alot of hard work but I'm sure Beth will be more than capable of obtaining good grades in these subjects. Myself and Jo are very proud that she has done so well and will help and support her with whatever career path she takes after she finishes college.

Well done Beth.

Robyn's Clinic Appointment

Today was Robyn's 3 monthly clinic at Grimsby with the CF team from Sheffield. Just before the last clinic she started with a cough and her PFT dropped to under 100%, so it was decided to start her on a months prescription of Cipro just to be on the safe side as she regularly grows pseudo. Her post Cipro PFT showed an improvement but still not up to her usual level, the cough swabs kept on coming back clear so it looked like the combination of Cipro & Promixin had done it's job. And so to today's clinic, her PFT was 108%, she has grown 4cm and put on 1.5kg! Way to go Robyn, if she had had socks on she would have surely blown them off! Prof.Taylor was very pleased with her overall health and has said that if all her test's come back ok when she goes for her Annual Review in September then he will look at stopping her Promixin. Lauren has got a planned stay in Sheffield coming up in September for some IV's and also to try to get her PFT on an even footing, I'm sure the new CF ward will help her with being in clink. So we continue to fight on and are more determined than ever to keep positive and support of our girls the best way we can.

Our Weekend in London.

We have just spent a really lovely weekend away in London. Lauren didn't come with us as she was at the V Fest in Stafford, rock on Loz! Now get a shower you stink!

We travelled down on Friday morning and arrived at our hotel mid afternoon, the first port of call after we had checked in and dumped the bags in the room was to get the tube to Upton Park to visit the club shop of West Ham United. We started off from Canning Town, which is where my maternal Grandfather was born, (he was a true Cockney as he was born within the sound of Bow Bells) I got a few souvenirs from the club shop and took some photos of the stadium. We didn't stick around for the game on Saturday though, if you have ever seen the film's Green Street or Cass, you would understand why this wasn't a good idea!

Saturday morning we headed out from the hotel and caught the Docklands Light Railway from East India station and changed onto the tube at Bank, we got off at Tottenham Court Road and walked through to Covent Garden where we visited the London Transport Museum which was very interesting to see how public transport in London had developed from the 18th century through to today. When we had finished in the museum we went for a look around Covent Garden which is a very busy and vibrant place full of market stalls, shops, café's and lots of street performers.

The next place to visit was a short tube ride away, Harrods is where the very rich and famous shop, it was sold to Qatar Holdings in May this year for £1.5 Billion. The escalator's are very elaborate and look like an Egyptian palace. I doubt there is a shop like it anywhere else in the world and is definitely worth taking a look at even if you can't afford to buy anything!

Next stop on Saturdays tour was Buckingham Palace for tea with her Majesty. We got there just at the right time as they where just changing the Guard, this caused a massive surge of people heading for the railings for a photo, but of course this meant we couldn't get through for our date for tea! The rest of the afternoon was taken up with shopping in Oxford Street, yes I was a fool to think that I would get away without any shopping travelling with 3 girls!!

Sunday to follow......

My Turn Robyn.

And of course I had to have a go!!

Sean Setterfield's Space

This is my first go at posting on a "Blog" type page, I hope that people find it interesting enough to keep coming back?

I have been married to Joanne for nearly 18 years and we have 3 beautiful girls, Lauren, Beth & Robyn. Our lives are kept busy as Lauren & Robyn both have Cystic Fibrosis, it is a never ending round of treatments & hospital visit's but with a smile and a positive attitude we strive to not let CF run our lives more than it has too.
